Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa University
Ethiopia's largest referral and teaching hospital, for decades the country's only radiotherapy centre and the base of its oncology training.
Overview
Tikur Anbessa (Black Lion) Specialized Hospital is the main teaching hospital of Addis Ababa University's College of Health Sciences and Ethiopia's largest referral hospital. Its oncology centre was for many years the only radiotherapy service in a country of more than 100 million people, and it remains the hub for medical oncology, paediatric oncology, gynaecological oncology and the national oncology residency programme as the government expands regional cancer centres. Research partnerships, including with the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg and the Addis Ababa city cancer registry, have documented breast and cervical cancer presentation and outcomes in Ethiopia.
