The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare lists it as the prefectural cancer care hub hospital (都道府県がん診療連携拠点病院) for Yamaguchi Prefecture, the top tier of the ministry's designated cancer care hospitals. Its history records that the university hospital was transferred from Yamaguchi Prefectural Medical College in 1967 and approved as a hospital of special functions in 1994. Its English pages list an Oncology Center and departments of radiation oncology and therapeutic radiology.
