Bowel cancer is becoming less common in older Swiss adults and slowly more common in adults under 50, where more of it is in the rectum and more is found at stage IV.
A nationwide study, led from the Geneva Cancer Registry on the national dataset of the NKRS, of every adult diagnosed with a first colorectal adenocarcinoma in Switzerland from 1980 to 2021. Rates were standardised to the 1976 European population, trends estimated by joinpoint regression and five-year net survival by the Pohar-Perme method.
Swiss screening starts at 50; the authors call for prevention, awareness and screening strategies adapted to younger adults.
