Led the survivorship movement's organisation for sixteen years and co-edited the Institute of Medicine report that defined what survivorship care is.
Ellen Stovall led the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship as chief executive from 1992 to 2008, the period in which the organisation moved to Washington, founded the Cancer Leadership Council, held the first national congress on cancer survivorship in 1995, and published Imperatives for Quality Cancer Care, the document the coalition's history credits with prompting the National Cancer Institute's director to establish the Office of Cancer Survivorship in 1996.
The coalition held one of two consumer seats on the Institute of Medicine's National Cancer Policy Board from 1996; its history records that Stovall served as vice-chair of the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Survivorship and co-edited its report on adult cancer survivorship. She was one of three editors, with Maria Hewitt and Sheldon Greenfield, of "From Cancer Patient to Cancer Survivor: Lost in Transition" in 2006. That report defined survivorship care as prevention, surveillance, intervention and coordination, and its second recommendation created the survivorship care plan.
She wrote and spoke as a person who had had cancer as well as an advocate; her remarks to the NCI and American Cancer Society survivorship symposium in June 2002 were published in Cancer in 2005. Oncology Times published "Remembering Cancer Advocate Ellen Stovall" in February 2016. ASCO's Ellen L. Stovall Award and Lecture for Advancement of Cancer Survivorship Care carries her name.
