Small pumps carried in a bag or pocket that keep chemotherapy running into a port or PICC line for one or two days at home, for example the 46-hour fluorouracil infusion used for bowel cancer.
Two kinds are used. Electronic ambulatory pumps (FDA product code FRN, infusion pump, or MEA for PCA-capable models; 21 CFR 880.5725) include Smiths Medical's CADD-Solis ambulatory infusion pump (K170982, 24 August 2017), the Curlin 8000 ambulatory infusion system (Zevex, K232793, 17 May 2024), Q Core Medical's Sapphire (K192860, 19 November 2020), Eitan Medical's Avoset (K213744, 10 March 2023) and Zyno Medical's Halo II (K153193, 30 August 2016). Elastomeric pumps (code MEB) have no electronics: a stretched balloon pushes the drug through a flow-restricting tube at a set rate, for example Epic Medical's SMARTeZ (K250234, 24 April 2026); the vascular access record names Baxter Infusor and B. Braun Easypump. Elastomeric flow varies with temperature and the height of the pump, which is why patients are told how to wear them.
A peristaltic or cassette mechanism (electronic) or the elastic recoil of a balloon reservoir (elastomeric) drives the drug through a fixed or programmed flow path into the central line.
