DEBATE is a small Korean randomised trial of chemotherapy with or without the immunotherapy durvalumab before surgery for bile duct and gallbladder cancer, judged by how often the surgeon achieves a clear margin.
Overview
DEBATE (NCT04308174) randomised 45 patients with histologically confirmed, localised adenocarcinoma of the biliary tract (intrahepatic, hilar or extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, or gallbladder carcinoma) to preoperative gemcitabine and cisplatin with or without durvalumab, with postoperative durvalumab for the experimental arm. The primary endpoint is the R0 resection rate. Enrolment completed and the trial is active with primary completion recorded in June 2023 and study completion in December 2025; results were not found in Europe PMC in September 2026. It is one of the first randomised tests of perioperative chemo-immunotherapy in biliary cancer and includes gallbladder cancer.
