LUMINA
LUMINA used tumour biology, not just age, to pick women who can skip breast radiotherapy: with a luminal A profile and endocrine therapy, local recurrence at five years was about two percent.
Overview
LUMINA was a single-arm prospective study of 500 women aged 55 or older with grade 1 or 2 T1N0 luminal A breast cancer (oestrogen and progesterone receptor-positive, HER2-negative, Ki67 of 13.25 percent or less) who had breast-conserving surgery and endocrine therapy and no radiotherapy. Five-year local recurrence was 2.3 percent (Whelan and colleagues, Lancet Oncology 2023), supporting biomarker-based omission.
- 2.3 out of 100 people reached this endpoint at 5 years with Endocrine therapy, no radiotherapy.
- There was no comparison group, so this number cannot tell you how much of the effect is due to the treatment.
- This endpoint is not one of the standard survival or response measures; read it alongside the trial's primary result.
- These results apply to the people the trial enrolled: Women aged 55 or over with small luminal A breast cancer after breast-conserving surgery and endocrine therapy: radiotherapy omitted. People in a different situation may not see the same effect.
Numbers are from the trial as recorded here; see the source links in the table below. This is orientation, not medical advice: ask your team how closely the trial population matches you.
