Overview
Chugai Pharmaceutical, listed in Tokyo and majority-owned by Roche since 2002 while remaining a separately listed company, is one of Japan's largest drug makers and its most important source of cancer medicines. It discovered the ALK inhibitor alectinib (Alecensa), developed worldwide with Roche, and markets Roche's oncology portfolio in Japan, including atezolizumab, trastuzumab, bevacizumab and polatuzumab vedotin, alongside its own antibody engineering platforms. It appears on OnCo as a lead sponsor of phase 3 cancer trials on ClinicalTrials.gov.

Alectinib is a well-tolerated ALK pill, standard first line for years and, since 2024, the first targeted therapy given after surgery for ALK-positive lung cancer.
A PD-L1 blocker used in lung, liver, and bladder cancer. In 2026 it became the first drug approved based on a blood test showing leftover cancer after bladder surgery.
Polatuzumab vedotin is an ADC against CD79b that, swapped into the classic R-CHOP regimen, became the first improvement on frontline lymphoma therapy in twenty years.
