Nordion (Sotera Health)
Nordion supplies most of the world's cobalt-60, which sterilises single-use bioprocess bags and medical devices and powers Gamma Knife units, and was the largest molybdenum-99 processor until Canada's NRU reactor stopped.
Overview
Nordion, an Ottawa company owned by Sotera Health, sells cobalt-60 sources harvested from Canadian CANDU power reactors operated by Bruce Power and Ontario Power Generation, used for gamma sterilisation of medical products and single-use bioprocess consumables and for Gamma Knife radiosurgery. Until the NRU reactor at Chalk River ceased isotope production in 2016 it processed a large share of the world's molybdenum-99, and its exit reshaped the supply chain described in the reactor record.
