Profound Medical makes TULSA-PRO, which ablates prostate tissue from inside the urethra with ultrasound under real-time MRI temperature control, and Sonalleve MR-guided focused ultrasound for fibroids and painful bone metastases.
Overview
Founded in Toronto in 2008, Profound Medical developed transurethral ultrasound ablation, in which a rotating ultrasound applicator inside the urethra heats prostate tissue while MRI thermometry closes the loop, cleared in the United States in 2019 for prostate tissue ablation and studied in the TACT trial for localised prostate cancer. It acquired the Sonalleve MR-HIFU platform from Philips in 2017 for uterine fibroids and palliation of bone metastasis pain. OnCo links it to focused ultrasound and MRI.
