RareCyte, in Seattle, makes two kinds of laboratory instruments: one that finds the rare tumour cells circulating in a blood sample, and one that stains a tumour slice for many proteins at once so researchers can map the cells in it.
RareCyte develops spatial biology and liquid biopsy technologies. Its CyteFinder platform, designed for monitoring circulating tumour cells in clinical trials, can in the company's words phenotype as few as one CTC per tube of blood; in 2021 it announced a synaptophysin CTC assay for characterising treatment-resistant cancers from blood. Its Orion spatial proteomics platform images many protein markers on one tissue section, and in April 2026 it launched Orion HT, for clinical-scale high-plex biomarker programmes with 30-slide automation, and Orion LE, for panel development and translational studies, and named Neil Kennedy president. In June 2024 it raised USD 20 million from new and existing investors, co-led by Arboretum Ventures and F-Prime Capital, with Forest Road, HealthQuest Capital, 5AM Ventures, Agilent Technologies, founder Ron Seubert, Sheatree Capital and GKCC LLC.
