Shionogi, founded in Osaka in 1878, is a research-based pharmaceutical company with strengths in infectious disease, including the antiviral Xofluza and the antibiotic cefiderocol, and in pain and central nervous system medicines. In oncology it developed nedaplatin (254-S), a second-generation platinum agent with less kidney toxicity than cisplatin, approved in Japan in 1995 as Aqupla for head and neck, lung, oesophageal, bladder, cervical, ovarian and testicular cancers.
