ZAP Surgical Systems
ZAP Surgical makes ZAP-X, a self-shielded machine for treating brain tumours with highly focused radiation in one to five outpatient sessions, without the concrete bunker or radioactive cobalt sources that older radiosurgery systems need.
Overview
ZAP Surgical Systems, founded by Stanford neurosurgeon John R. Adler, makes the ZAP-X Gyroscopic Radiosurgery platform for dedicated cranial stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). A linear accelerator on dual independent gantries delivers non-coplanar beams from thousands of angles with integrated kV imaging. The self-shielded design needs no radiation vault and, unlike Gamma Knife, no cobalt-60 source, lowering cost and allowing installation in outpatient settings. Indications include brain metastases, meningiomas and trigeminal neuralgia, treated in one to five sessions. ZAP-X received FDA 510(k) clearance in 2017, Japan Shonin clearance in 2020 and CE marking in 2021; the ZAP-Axon planning system is also FDA and CE cleared. Installations include Gustave Roussy, Haaglanden Medical Center, several German hospitals and eight systems in China. In November 2024 the company closed a USD 78 million Series E led by Qingdao Baheal Medical.
