The new AIIMS network (PMSSY)
India has multiplied its flagship AIIMS medical institutes from one to more than twenty, each with an oncology department, to bring specialist cancer care and training to states that had none.
Overview
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi (1956) was for half a century India's only institute of its kind. Under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, announced in 2003 and launched in March 2006, six new AIIMS were built in under-served states (Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Raipur and Rishikesh) and further waves followed; by January 2023 twenty AIIMS were operating, with more under construction or planned.
Each new AIIMS carries medical, surgical and radiation oncology, and several have dedicated cancer blocks; together with the Tata Memorial expansion and the state cancer institutes funded under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke, they form the public backbone that PM-JAY patients are referred into. The network also multiplies India's oncology training capacity, which has been a binding constraint on care.
