The public body that runs Indonesia's national health insurance scheme, which had about 285 million members in 2026 and pays for cancer treatment on the national formulary, including cervical, breast, lung and bowel cancer screening.
BPJS Kesehatan runs the Jaminan Kesehatan Nasional (JKN), Indonesia's single national health insurance scheme. Its president director, Prihati Pujowaskito, said in October 2026 that 284.72 million people were registered, 98.14 per cent of the population, against a 2026 national plan target of 98.7 per cent; in April 2026 he put the share of members whose cover was active at 81.5 per cent.
The national cancer plan reports that BPJS Kesehatan spent 3.1 trillion rupiah on cancer treatment in 2020 and 5.9 trillion in 2023, making cancer its second largest cost after heart disease, and that about 70 per cent of patients start treatment at an advanced stage. The plan also states that the JKN benefit package does not yet cover many targeted and immunotherapy medicines recommended in Indonesian clinical guidelines, and cites a study at Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital in which 79 per cent of patients receiving radiotherapy under JKN reported financial toxicity.
Presidential Regulation 59 of 2024 added fourteen screening services to the JKN benefit, among them screening for cervical, breast, bowel and lung cancer, and introduced a standard inpatient class (Kelas Rawat Inap Standar).
