One of the largest public cord blood banks in the world, part of Duke University School of Medicine. Mothers donate their babies' cord blood, and the units are listed on the NMDP registry for unrelated patients.
The Carolinas Cord Blood Bank was established in 1998 with support from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the NIH and is part of the Duke University School of Medicine. It holds a racially diverse inventory of donated units, listed on the NMDP registry, and received FDA approval for DUCORD, its licensed unrelated-donor cord blood product. It has distributed units for transplantation to several thousand children and adults since 1999, many with leukaemia, lymphoma or severe aplastic anaemia, and also supplies units for research.
