A US foundation, started in 2003 by a woman with thymic carcinoma, that supports and educates people with thymoma and thymic carcinoma and helped bring about the international research group for these tumours.
The Foundation for Thymic Cancer Research was founded in 2003 by Barbara Neibauer after she was diagnosed with a rare ectopic thymic carcinoma in her neck, according to its about page; she died in September 2005 and the foundation continued her work. The page says it sponsored workshops in New York in 2007 and Houston in 2008 that led, with the National Institutes of Health, to the First International Conference on Thymic Malignancies in Bethesda in August 2009, from which the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group (ITMIG) was formed. It credits those meetings with the first NCCN practice guidelines for thymic malignancies, and says that with ITMIG leading international research the foundation now concentrates on patient support and education. It describes itself as a 501(c)(3) registered in New York State; the IRS records it in Sleepy Hollow, New York, with tax exemption issued in October 2002.
