One of Australia's leading genomics institutes, whose Kinghorn Cancer Centre with St Vincent's pioneered genomics-guided treatment of pancreatic cancer and rare tumours.
The Garvan Institute was founded in 1963 at St Vincent's Hospital in Darlinghurst and became a leader in medical genomics, hosting the Kinghorn Centre for Clinical Genomics and, with St Vincent's, The Kinghorn Cancer Centre, opened in 2012 as an integrated research and treatment facility. Garvan investigators led the Australian Pancreatic Cancer Genome Initiative within the International Cancer Genome Consortium (Andrew Biankin, Sean Grimmond), established the Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) programme for rare and advanced cancers with Omico, and run leading programmes in breast cancer biology, prostate cancer, single-cell and spatial genomics, and epigenetics (Susan Clark). Patients access precision oncology trials, phase 1 studies and germline genomics through the Kinghorn Cancer Centre.
