GIMEMA

aka Gruppo Italiano Malattie EMatologiche dell'Adulto, Italian Group for Adult Hematologic Diseases

Italy's adult haematology trials group, famous for making acute promyelocytic leukaemia curable without chemotherapy and for chemotherapy-free Philadelphia-positive ALL.

Founded in 1982, GIMEMA coordinates more than 100 Italian haematology centres from Rome. With the German AMLSG it ran APL0406, which showed all-trans retinoic acid plus arsenic trioxide beats chemotherapy in low-to-intermediate risk acute promyelocytic leukaemia, and its LAL2116 D-ALBA trial showed dasatinib followed by blinatumomab can induce deep molecular responses in Ph-positive ALL without cytotoxic chemotherapy. GIMEMA also runs CML, CLL, myeloma and MDS trials and a central laboratory network for molecular monitoring. Its quality-of-life working party pioneered patient-reported outcomes in haematology trials.
