Fondazione AIRC per la ricerca sul cancro

aka AIRC, Associazione Italiana per la Ricerca sul Cancro

Italy's main charitable funder of cancer research, supporting thousands of investigators at IEO, the Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori and universities nationwide.

Founded in 1965 by Umberto Veronesi and colleagues, AIRC funds investigator grants, the large multi-centre 5x1000 programmes, fellowships and start-up grants, and is the largest non-governmental funder of cancer research in Italy. It has supported the Milan groups behind breast-conserving surgery, sentinel node biopsy and the molecular oncology of leukaemia, and continues to fund immunotherapy, metastasis and early-detection programmes. AIRC's public campaigns (Oranges for Health, Azaleas for Research) are a national fixture, and its FIRC-Institute of Molecular Oncology (IFOM) in Milan is a dedicated research institute.
