A public cord blood bank at Düsseldorf University Hospital, founded in 1992 with the German José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation. Its unrelated-donor cord blood is licensed as a medicine in Germany.
The José Carreras Stammzellbank was founded in 1992, with support from the Deutsche José Carreras Leukämie-Stiftung, at the Institute for Transplantation Diagnostics and Cell Therapeutics on the Düsseldorf University Hospital campus, under the direction of Gesine Kögler. In 2001 the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut licensed its unrelated-donor cord blood transplants as a medicinal product, a licence extended without time limit on 26 May 2010, and it was accredited by FACT-NetCord from 2003. It holds a manufacturing authorisation from the Düsseldorf regional government; the bank states that more than 1,230 patients had been treated with Düsseldorf stem cell transplants by 2016.
