Argentina's oldest cancer charity, founded in 1921: a medical centre in Buenos Aires for early detection, free tests for people without health cover, and more than 100 local branches.
LALCEC is a non-profit civil association created on 22 July 1921 by Helena Larroque de Roffo, who with her husband Dr Ángel Roffo had trained in France with Marie Curie. Its aim is to reduce cancer incidence and mortality through awareness, early detection and support for patients and the people close to them. It runs the Centro Médico LALCEC in the Palermo district of Buenos Aires, offering early detection and diagnostic tests, and a programme of free tests for people without health cover. Its network has more than 100 branches across Argentina, the first formed in Tucumán in 1945; its history page also records a mobile mammography unit giving free mammograms, a stop-smoking programme and free mole checks. UICC lists it as a Full Member.
