The world's first public cord blood bank, run by New York Blood Center, which marked its 30th anniversary in February 2023. It stopped collecting in 2020 but keeps more than 27,000 frozen cord blood units for transplants and research.
New York Blood Center describes its National Cord Blood Program as the world's first public cord blood bank; it marked its 30th anniversary in February 2023. The first clinical transplants of unrelated-donor cord blood were performed with NCBP units, and in 2011 it became the first to obtain an FDA biologics licence, for HEMACORD. NCBP stopped active collections in 2020 and maintains a cryopreserved inventory of more than 27,000 clinical-grade units, offered through NYBC's Comprehensive Cell Solutions as unrelated-donor transplant sources and for cell therapy research.
