Overview
Tygerberg Hospital opened in 1976 in Cape Town's northern suburbs and is, with Groote Schuur, one of the two central academic hospitals of the Western Cape provincial health department. It is the teaching hospital of Stellenbosch University's Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences and provides medical oncology, radiation oncology, haematology, paediatric oncology and surgical oncology for a large public-sector population. Research strengths include paediatric oncology and the South African Children's Cancer Study Group, breast and cervical cancer in the public sector, HIV-associated malignancies, and nuclear medicine and theranostics.
