Groote Schuur Hospital / University of Cape Town
South Africa's most famous academic hospital, site of the first heart transplant, and with UCT a leading African centre for cancer research, radiation oncology and oesophageal and cervical cancer studies.
Groote Schuur Hospital, opened in 1938, is the principal teaching hospital of the University of Cape Town and serves the Western Cape's public patients. Its radiation oncology, medical oncology, haematology, surgical and paediatric oncology (with Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital) departments are among the strongest in Africa, and UCT's research groups work on oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma in African populations, cervical cancer and HIV-associated malignancies, Kaposi sarcoma, breast cancer genetics in African women, and cancer registration through the South African Children's Tumour Registry. UCT's Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine, the SA Medical Research Council units and the Cancer Association of South Africa collaborate with the hospital, which also trains oncologists for much of sub-Saharan Africa.
