The cancer institute of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in Little Rock, which describes itself as Arkansas' only academic cancer treatment and research facility.
The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute is part of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock. It describes itself as Arkansas' only academic cancer treatment and research facility, and says it offers the largest number of cancer clinical trials on more cancer types than anywhere else in the state. Its history page says plans to formalise a cancer institute, then called the Arkansas Cancer Research Center, were approved in 1984, and that it was renamed in 2007 in memory of Lt. Gov. Winthrop P. Rockefeller, who died of a rare bone marrow disorder. A 12-storey expansion opened in 2010, and the institute has since developed a Myeloma Center. Its research is organised in programmes including Cancer Biology, Cancer Prevention and Population Sciences, and Cancer Therapeutics.
