Siegel 2013: Cancer statistics, 2013

Siegel, Naishadham and Jemal projected 1,660,290 new cancer cases and 580,350 cancer deaths in the United States for 2013. Over 2005 to 2009 incidence declined slightly in men (0.6 percent a year) and was stable in women, while death rates fell 1.8 percent a year in men and 1.5 percent a year in women. The overall cancer death rate had dropped 20 percent from its 1991 peak of 215.1 per 100,000 to 173.1 in 2009, with continuing declines in lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancer. Over 2000 to 2009 the largest annual falls in death rates were for chronic myeloid leukaemia (8.4 percent, the imatinib era), stomach cancer (3.1 percent), colorectal cancer (3.0 percent) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (3.0 percent).
