Siegel 2023: Cancer statistics, 2023

The American Cancer Society's annual US report for 2023 projected about 1.96 million new cancer cases, reported a continued fall in the cancer death rate, and flagged rising prostate cancer diagnoses at advanced stage alongside a steep fall in cervical cancer among young women vaccinated against HPV.

Siegel, Miller, Wagle and Jemal projected 1,958,310 new cancer cases and 609,820 cancer deaths in the United States for 2023. The cancer death rate had fallen 33% since 1991, an estimated 3.8 million deaths averted. The report noted that prostate cancer incidence had risen by about 3% a year from 2014 to 2019 after a decade of decline, driven by advanced-stage disease, and that cervical cancer incidence in women aged 20 to 24 had fallen by 65% from 2012 to 2019, consistent with HPV vaccination.
