A review that names and describes endogenous T-cell therapy: growing the rare cancer-recognising T cells from a patient's blood and giving them back, as an alternative to tumour-derived or genetically engineered T cells.
The review sets out three approaches to adoptive T-cell transfer (tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes, CAR- or TCR-engineered lymphocytes, and expansion of low-frequency endogenous T cells from peripheral blood) and describes the third, ETC therapy, its isolation and expansion methods and its clinical experience (Cancer Journal 2015).
The paper gives the approach its name and makes the case for it beyond melanoma.
