Maria De Santis
Berlin oncologist who led SEMPET, the study showing that a PET scan can tell which residual masses after chemotherapy for seminoma still contain cancer, sparing many men further treatment.
Overview
Maria De Santis is a genitourinary medical oncologist at Charité in Berlin. She was first author of the 2004 Journal of Clinical Oncology report of the SEMPET study, which showed that FDG-PET reliably distinguished viable tumour from fibrosis in residual masses after chemotherapy for seminoma, particularly for masses over 3 cm, a finding adopted into guidelines. She is also a leading investigator in urothelial cancer and chairs the EAU testis cancer guideline panel.
