Computer scientist who built Mirai and Sybil, AI models that predict breast and lung cancer risk years before diagnosis.
Overview
Regina Barzilay, a breast cancer survivor, led the development of Mirai, which predicts five-year breast cancer risk from mammograms, and Sybil, which predicts six-year lung cancer risk from a single low-dose CT, both validated across international cohorts and now in prospective trials. Her group also uses machine learning for antibiotic and drug discovery. She received the inaugural AAAI Squirrel AI Award and a MacArthur Fellowship.
