Tatsuya Ohno is Director of the Gunma University Heavy Ion Medical Center in Maebashi, which began heavy-ion (carbon-ion) cancer treatment in 2010 as the first university-based facility of its kind in Japan. In his director's greeting he describes the advantages of heavy-ion therapy over conventional X-ray treatment in dose concentration and biological effectiveness, with courses typically completed within one to four weeks, and the centre's roles in training specialists and promoting international collaboration.
