Waseem Qasim
Delivered the first gene-edited off-the-shelf CAR-T cells to infants with leukaemia and the first base-edited CAR-T therapy.
Overview
Waseem Qasim led the compassionate use and then trials of UCART19, TALEN-edited universal donor CAR T cells, in infants and children with refractory ALL, the first clinical use of gene-edited allogeneic CAR-T. In 2023 his team reported the first patient treated with base-edited CAR7 T cells for T-cell ALL, a disease where autologous CAR-T is impractical. He leads cell and gene therapy at Great Ormond Street.
