A pump about the size of a hockey puck placed under the skin of the abdomen during an operation, with a tube into the artery feeding the liver. It sends chemotherapy straight to tumours in the liver and is refilled through the skin every few weeks.
The pump in current American use is the Intera 3000 hepatic artery infusion pump, held by Intera Oncology under PMA P890055 (product code LKK, implanted programmable infusion pump, class III). The PMA's earliest record in the FDA database is dated 11 March 1996, and 1996 and 1997 supplements name the Model 3000 constant flow implantable pump; supplements from 2025 and 2026 carry the Intera 3000 name. It is refilled with a non-coring needle (Intera refill kit and needles, K213823 and K211121). Trials in the corpus that use hepatic arterial infusion include NCT05286814, which names the hepatic artery infusion pump in its title, NCT06857773 in colorectal liver metastases, and NCT00268463, which gave floxuridine by hepatic arterial infusion.
A gas-propellant chamber presses on a drug reservoir at constant pressure, pushing drug through a flow restrictor into a catheter in the hepatic artery; refills through a central septum also recharge the propellant.
