Besides the lymphoma linked to textured breast implants, the FDA has received reports of a skin-type cancer (squamous cell carcinoma) and other lymphomas in the scar tissue around implants. It believes they may be rare and does not yet know their cause or how often they happen.
In a safety communication updated on 8 March 2023 the FDA said it "is aware of 19 cases of SCC in the capsule around the breast implant from published literature", that deaths from progression have been reported, and that "the cause, incidence and risk factors remain unknown". It first warned of SCC and various lymphomas in the capsule on 8 September 2022. These lymphomas are not the same as breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), which has its own record. Since 22 March 2023 clinicians can report cases to the PROFILE registry run by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Foundation and the FDA. In December 2023 the FDA added mesenchymal tumours, including sarcoma, to the same section of its risks page.
