This private member's bill would have let terminally ill adults in England and Wales ask for help to end their own life. It passed the House of Commons in June 2025 but did not complete its House of Lords stages in that session, so it is not law.
United Kingdom (England and Wales), private member's bill, not enacted. Parliament's record gives its long title as 'A Bill to allow adults who are terminally ill, subject to safeguards and protections, to request and be provided with assistance to end their own life', sponsored by Kim Leadbeater in the Commons and Lord Falconer of Thoroton in the Lords; it originated in the Commons and its last recorded stage is Lords committee stage, which began on 14 November 2025. A Bevan Brittan briefing of 5 May 2026 reports that the Commons passed it at third reading on 20 June 2025, that as drafted it applied to people with a life expectancy of six months or less, and that it did not complete its Lords stages by 24 April 2026, the last scheduled day of committee stage, so it will not pass in that parliamentary session.
