In the Australian state of Victoria, people at the end of life who meet the law's eligibility criteria can ask for voluntary assisted dying. Amendments passed in November 2025 take effect from April 2027.
Australia, Victoria, state statute: the Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2017. The Victorian Department of Health states that Victorians who are at the end of their life and who meet eligibility criteria can ask for voluntary assisted dying, and links an overview of eligibility, supports and safeguards. A Voluntary Assisted Dying Review Board oversees the Act, and a five-year review of its operation has been published. On 18 November 2025 the Victorian Parliament passed amendments to the Act, which the Department states will take effect from April 2027 after an 18-month implementation period. Other Australian states have their own laws; they are not sourced here.
