Medicare treats laboratory tests that grow a patient's tumour cells and expose them to cancer drugs to pick a treatment as experimental, and does not pay for them.
United States, Medicare laboratory National Coverage Determination 190.7, version 1, effective 1 July 1996. It describes assays that grow human tumour stem cell colonies in culture and expose them to anticancer drugs to predict which drug will work for the individual patient, and the Fluorescent Cytoprint Assay, a miniaturised organ culture system. Its coverage statement: "Human tumor drug sensitivity assays are considered experimental, and therefore, not covered under Medicare at this time", and the same for assays based on tumour micro-organs rather than single-cell clones.
