The Mumbai generics maker famous for a one-dollar-a-day HIV regimen, which sells oncology generics across India and Africa and in 2026 partnered with ImmunoACT to take Indian CAR-T therapy to Africa.
Overview
Cipla was founded in Mumbai in 1935 by Khwaja Abdul Hamied and is India's third-largest drug producer. Its reputation rests on the early-2000s antiretroviral combination it sold for about 300 dollars a year against 12,000 dollars for the branded regimen, and it has applied the same approach to oncology generics and biosimilars for India and emerging markets. In 2026 ImmunoACT announced a collaboration with Cipla to distribute NexCAR19 in South Africa, Algeria and Morocco, the first export of an Indian CAR-T therapy.
