Flagship Pioneering
A Cambridge, Massachusetts firm that invents and builds its own biotech companies rather than backing outside founders. Its cancer-focused companies include Foghorn Therapeutics and Repertoire Immune Medicines.
Overview
Flagship Pioneering was founded in Cambridge in 1999 by Noubar Afeyan and Ed Kania as NewcoGen, became Flagship Ventures and took its current name in 2016 (Wikipedia). Its process starts with internal 'what if' explorations that become prototype companies and then full operating companies, which Flagship funds and controls in their early years before syndicating. Cancer is one of several disease areas. Foghorn Therapeutics targets the chromatin regulatory system and 'is developing multiple product candidates in oncology'; Repertoire Immune Medicines decodes T-cell receptor and antigen interactions to build T-cell-targeted therapies for cancer and autoimmune disease, with partnerships including Bristol Myers Squibb, Genentech, Pfizer and Eli Lilly. The best-known Flagship company, Moderna, also runs cancer vaccine programmes.
