Neogene Therapeutics
Neogene developed T-cell receptor therapies that can recognise cancer-specific mutations hidden inside tumour cells, an approach aimed at solid tumours. AstraZeneca bought the company in January 2023 for up to $320 million.
Overview
Neogene Therapeutics was a clinical-stage biotechnology company pioneering the discovery, development and manufacturing of next-generation T-cell receptor therapies (TCR-Ts) for solid tumours. Unlike most cell therapies that target surface proteins, TCR-Ts can recognise intracellular targets including cancer-specific mutations. Neogene had its EU headquarters in Amsterdam and US headquarters in Santa Monica, California, and was backed by Vida Ventures, TPG, EcoR1 Capital, Jeito Capital, Syncona, Polaris Partners and Pontifax. AstraZeneca announced the acquisition on 29 November 2022 and completed it on 16 January 2023, paying $200 million initially with up to $120 million in further contingent and non-contingent consideration (total up to $320 million, cash and debt free). Neogene operates as a wholly owned AstraZeneca subsidiary with operations in Amsterdam and California.
