NanO2 is an oxygen-carrying infusion from NuvOx Therapeutics, given alongside radiotherapy to make it work better in tumours that are short of oxygen. It is in a trial in newly diagnosed glioblastoma.
NanO2 is NuvOx Therapeutics' dodecafluoropentane emulsion. NuvOx states that it has been given in completed phase 1/2a trials in acute ischaemic stroke and glioblastoma, that the FDA has allowed phase 2b trials in both, and that it received orphan drug designation for the treatment of glioblastoma in 2015 and for sickle cell anaemia in 2016. The phase 2 RESTORE trial (NCT03862430) compares NanO2 with saline placebo alongside radiotherapy and temozolomide in newly diagnosed glioblastoma.
An emulsion of dodecafluoropentane droplets about 30 times smaller in diameter than a red blood cell, which turn to gas at body temperature and carry oxygen into hypoxic tissue; in cancer it is meant to raise tumour oxygen so radiotherapy generates more free radicals, as described by NuvOx Therapeutics.
