The US defense department's melanoma research fund, created by Congress in 2019. It funds prevention and earlier detection, research on rare melanomas of the eye, hands and feet and mucous membranes, and survivorship, and received 220 million dollars in its first seven years.
Congress established the Melanoma Research Program in fiscal year 2019 with a $10 million appropriation; the congressional language cited on the page noted that melanoma diagnoses were increasing among active-duty service members and that melanoma is the fifth most common cancer among veterans, and a 2023 Department of Defense study found an 87 per cent higher rate of melanoma in military aircrew than in a demographically similar US population. Before the MRP, the Peer Reviewed Cancer Research Program funded melanoma and other skin cancer research from FY09 to FY18.
Its strategic priorities are prevention and interception (detection and monitoring for people at highest risk, and stopping initiation, early spread, emergence from dormancy and metastasis), rare melanomas (uveal, acral and mucosal), and survivorship. The page lists $220 million in appropriations for FY19 to FY25 and $40 million for FY26, and 212 awards in FY19 to FY24.
