The US defense department's prostate cancer research fund, running since 1997. Congress has given it about 2.4 billion dollars, it has made nearly 4,000 awards, and it puts weight on quality of life, new treatments for lethal disease and the higher rates seen in African American men.
The programme's stated vision is to "conquer prostate cancer" and its mission to fund research that will eliminate death and suffering from prostate cancer and improve the well-being of service members, their families, veterans and all patients and caregivers affected. Since 1997 it has sought highly innovative research, high-impact research with near-term clinical relevance, mentored training for the next generation of prostate cancer investigators, and resources for translational research. Its current Overarching Challenges are to improve quality of life, develop new or better treatments for men with lethal prostate cancer, reduce disparities among high-risk groups, and define the biology of progression to lethal disease. The page notes that incidence, morbidity and mortality vary markedly by race and ethnicity, with African American men experiencing the highest rates in the US.
The page lists congressional appropriations of $2.445 billion for FY97 to FY25 and $75 million for FY26, and 3,947 awards made in FY97 to FY24.
