Lyon's university hospital group of 13 public hospitals, whose biostatistics service co-produces France's national cancer estimates and whose lung physicians co-lead the national lung screening pilot.
The Hospices Civils de Lyon describe themselves as 13 public hospitals covering every medical and surgical discipline, the university hospital of Lyon bound by agreement to the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, with an institute of cancer care among their divisions. Their hospitals include Édouard Herriot, Lyon Sud and the Croix-Rousse.
The HCL matter to French cancer statistics out of proportion to their size: their biostatistics service is one of the four partners, with Santé publique France, the Francim registry network and INCa, that model national incidence and survival from the local registries. INCa names Professor Sébastien Couraud of the HCL as co-coordinator, with Professor Marie-Pierre Revel of the Paris public hospitals, of IMPULSION, the national lung cancer screening pilot that opened to participants in May 2026, and Hôpital Lyon Sud is one of its two registered sites. The HCL are also the sponsor of several French trials held in OnCo, including TUMORAPA and TROPHIMMUN.
The authors describe France as one of the first countries to put genome sequencing into clinical practice nationwide, and for cancer the programme returns results in a median of 45 days, about six weeks. It is a programme report written by the programme, so it describes what was delivered rather than whether sequencing changed what happened to patients.
This is the source of the headline French figure, and it is a projection from registries that cover about a fifth of the population, not a count. It excludes skin cancers other than melanoma, which is one reason it sits below the GLOBOCAN 2022 figure for France, and its prostate figure is carried forward from 2018.
