Instituto do Câncer do Estado de São Paulo (ICESP)
The São Paulo state cancer institute, part of Hospital das Clínicas and the University of São Paulo medical school, and one of the largest public cancer hospitals in Latin America.
Overview
ICESP was created by the State of São Paulo as the cancer institute of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo, managed by the Fundação Faculdade de Medicina, and treats patients exclusively through Brazil's public health system (SUS). The institute reports 520 operational beds (as of February 2026), around 40,000 active patients and more than 150,000 patients treated since it opened, across four sites. It provides medical oncology, radiotherapy, surgical oncology, haematology, nuclear medicine and palliative care, hosts a large research and teaching programme in translational oncology, and is the principal Brazilian public-sector site for many international trials.
