Instituto de Oncología Ángel H. Roffo

The Instituto de Oncología Ángel H. Roffo was founded in 1922 by the pathologist Ángel Roffo as Latin America's first institute devoted to experimental and clinical cancer research, and it remains part of the Universidad de Buenos Aires. It is a public cancer hospital with surgical oncology, medical oncology, radiotherapy, haematology and palliative care, and its research departments in tumour biology, immunology and epidemiology continue the tradition of Roffo, who was among the first to link tobacco tar to cancer experimentally. The institute trains oncologists for the university and hosts national tumour registries.
