The first cancer centre in North Karnataka, in Hubballi, founded in 1977 by surgeon R. B. Patil and known for feeding patients and their attendants free of charge.
KCTRI was established in 1977 by Dr R. B. Patil, a surgeon who had seen North Karnataka patients avoid treatment because it meant travelling to Bombay or Madras. It opened with a cobalt radiotherapy unit, an operating theatre, pathology and chemotherapy, together with free food and accommodation for patients.
The institute describes itself as the first cancer care centre in North Karnataka, with about 148 beds, a linear accelerator capable of IMRT and IGRT, a blood bank and a fellowship in head and neck cancer surgery. By its own count it has treated more than one lakh new patients since it opened, and its Annadana scheme has served daily meals to about 150 patients and attendants for 25 years. Patients covered by state schemes such as Arogya Karnataka are treated there.
