Ludwig Cancer Research
The cancer research institute that shipping magnate Daniel K. Ludwig endowed in 1971 with nearly all of his international holdings; it has spent more than $1.8 billion of its own money on cancer science.
Overview
Founded in 1971, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research is an international not-for-profit that funds and runs its own laboratories rather than making grants from donations. Its own account states that it has invested more than $1.8 billion of its resources in cancer research and holds an endowment valued at $1.5 billion. In 2006 the Ludwig gift also created Ludwig Centers and professorships at six leading US institutions, each with more than $2 million a year in perpetuity. Ludwig scientists worked on the biology that became checkpoint immunotherapy, on tumour antigens and on cancer genomics. Headquartered in New York with historic roots in Zurich.
