Treated for prostate cancer from 1992, he gave MIT $100 million in 2007 to build an institute that puts engineers and cancer biologists under one roof, and MSK $150 million in 2015 for a new outpatient cancer building.
Overview
David H. Koch (1940-2019), the industrialist and MIT alumnus, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1992 and became one of the largest individual donors to cancer research in the United States. MIT records that on 9 October 2007 it launched a major cancer initiative supported by his $100 million gift, which became the David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research, deliberately mixing engineers with cancer biologists to work on drug delivery, nanomedicine, imaging and immunology. In 2015 Memorial Sloan Kettering announced a record $150 million gift from him for the David H. Koch Center for Cancer Care, a 23-storey outpatient building on the East River. He also funded the David H. Koch Cancer Research Building at Johns Hopkins, a genitourinary cancer research centre at MD Anderson and the Prostate Cancer Foundation, on whose board he sat. He died of prostate cancer in 2019.
